You are going to take a virtual tour of a visitor's centre and a trail adapted for people with functional diversity. This is a project financed by La Caixa that aims to bring the Natural Areas of Andalusia closer to everyone in an inclusive way through 8 virtual tours, one per province.

The aim of this project is to show the route and the equipment as well as its interpretative content so that users can assess their degree of accessibility before going through it "in situ".

The tours start at a visitor reception facility and continue along an adapted trail. The virtual tour is an experience in itself, as there is the option of taking an immersive visit using virtual reality glasses with a smartphone (APP Matterport VR).
On the main screen we find icons (see image):

To exit the view we are in, click on one of the icons that appear in the lower left corner, depending on the user's intention.
In the legend, this different options appears:

START: A useful option to move quickly to the beginning of the trail or to the visitor center.
INFORMATION: This tab shows all the information markers outside the reception equipment classified by "LANDMARKS" and "ACCESIBILITY". Each one can be accessed by clicking on its description and allows you to continue the tour from that same point.
LOCATION: Address of the reception equipment.

We hope you enjoy this immersive experience and decide to visit this site personally.

In accordance with the seasons: winter pastures, summer pastures. For at least ten centuries, every autumn, thousands of cattle marched from the mountainous areas of northern Spain to the temperate plains of the south in search of fresh pastures.

An extraordinary this back-and-forth motion every year through ravines, paths... that continues to take place in a testimonial way.
The livestock trails are public property regulated by law. Currently, the Andalusian Government is working to "demarcate" these roads and restore their routes.

They are part of our culture and an opportunity to incorporate "new uses for old roads". Environmental education, trekking, cycling, nature observation... are some of their potentialities.

The primitive forest: Since remote times, the wooded areas whose poor soil did not allow its agricultural exploitation, transformed the original landscape.

Clear-felling: To obtain pasture for the cattle, clearings were opened in the forest by removing trees and bushes. And products were obtained, such as wood and coal.

The consolidated pasture: Time and the human intervention created an original landscape of trees scattered in a Mediterranean environment: the pasture.

THE IBERIAN LYNX is a unique species in the Iberian Peninsula. The damage of its habitat and the small size of its populations mean that its survival is in danger.

In Cardeña and Andújar one of the most numerous and stable populations survives.

Its territory can vary from 500 to 2,500 hectares. It lives in areas of Mediterranean scrub, with an abundance of rabbits, and far from human populations.

The rabbit is the basis of its diet, sometimes almost exclusively. The lynx eliminates other predators from its territory such as foxes, wild cats, ...and feeds on fewer rabbits than they would need and thus guarantees the maintenance of its populations.

Their presence is a sign of the good state of conservation and environmental quality of the Mediterranean mountain. It needs large territories which have not been transformed : a combination of the mountains where it breeds and takes refuge and more open areas where it finds its favorite food.

The territory of the Sierra de Cardeña and Montoro has been exploited through economic uses and practices that ensured the annual renewal of its resources (pasture, hunting, firewood...). It provides traditional uses and new ones that will help to ensure the socio-economic future of the area.

This is the legacy and the opportunity that today is presented as an inheritance to be shared with future generations.

Restoration of Mediterranean vegetation: To stop the erosion of deforested areas, during the central decades of the 20th century, some areas of the Park were reforested with stone pine and black pine. The projects of action on these pine forests want to recover and promote the native vegetation of these mountains. The aim is to allow the entry of holm oaks, gall oaks, cork oaks and other species to improve a more mature and natural mountain.

In the Sierra de Cardeña and Montoro live emblematic species of the Mediterranean world, among its meadows, mountains, ravines and rivers. Scarce, threatened and extremely valuable species, which have disappeared in other areas of the Iberian Peninsula such as the wolf, lynx, otter, golden eagle, imperial eagle or black vulture.

Crags that touch the sky, habitat of the Golden Eagle: The dark contour of the Golden Eagle can be seen next to walls and rocky outcrops where it makes its nests.

Mount, home of the wolf: Intelligent, social and capable of covering great distances, the wolf brings to our memory stories where reality, myth and legend are confused and intermingled.

Rivers and banks, refuge of otters: The excellent quality of the rivers and streams of the Park allows the presence of the otter, and a varied amount of aquatic invertebrates that, together with fish, are part of its diet.

The pastureland is an example of balance between the use of its resources and the conservation of its natural values, allowing products to be obtained every year without affecting their renewal and maintenance.

It is a good example of a sustainable economic production system.
A system of multiple relationships where the human being plays an important role.

The rich and productive pasture: The pasture gives away a wide range of potential resources. Its management is aimed at the use of livestock, but there are many products from the scrubland and trees that have traditionally been the basic pillars of its economy.

The contour of the holm oak dominates the mountains and meadows. Its abundance is related to the slope, the richness of the soil, and "humanization" of the landscape. Many other plants accompany the holm oak.

Strawberry tree: Green and bright canopies of this bush can be seen in the holm oak forests, especially in the less dry and more temperate areas. Its fruits serve as food for numerous birds and mammals.

Holm oak: Mediterranean species par excellence, it is the most abundant tree in the Park. It has powerful and deep roots and leaves adapted not to lose water, which allows it to withstand the cold winter and the dryness of summer. Its acorns are a very nutritious food for great part of the Park's fauna.

Cantueso Lavander: An aromatic plant that accompanies the holm oak in the less dense areas of the forest. The oils that cover it provide its fragrance. Its flowers are very important for beekeeping in the Park's mountain areas.

Sticky rockrose: It creates impenetrable mountain formations, excellent refuges for the fauna. Its name refers to its leaves that are impregnated with a sticky substance that gives it a bright appearance of intense aroma and has been traditionally used as a perfume fixer.
Stone Pine: Easily identifiable in the distance because of its contour, in which the rounded shape of its crown stands out, it is the most Mediterranean of our pines and is also highly appreciated for its production of pine nuts.

In the Park there are pine and black pine reforestations that began between 1950 and 1960 and whose main objective was to stop the erosion of deforested areas.

Diversity of habitats... richness of life: forests, bushes, pastures, ... The Park provides a wide range of habitats for a varied fauna: birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fish, with emblematic species that find here one of their last refuges.

Azure-winged Magpie: One of the most representative species of the mountain. It lives in noisy groups and feeds on insects, carrion and fruit, such as blackberries and strawberries.

Ocellated lizard: this animal is associated with Mediterranean ecosystems, large and striking. It prefers relatively open places, such as pastures, but with the close presence of bushes where it can hide. It is easily identified by the blue spots on its sides.

Imperial Eagle: Emblematic species in the Park and one of the most threatened birds of prey in the world: the total population is less than 200 breeding pairs, unique in the Iberian Peninsula. It prefers forest areas with a Mediterranean climate with a large number of rabbits (its basic prey) and little human influence. It is very territorial and joins its mate for life.

Deer: In the Park it has a great hunting value, and it is one of the most common and valued. There are large Mediterranean mountain farms that maintain their profitability thanks to the deer herding.
San Antonio frog: Small frog with smooth skin and bright green color. Its limbs are long and very developed. Its fingers allow it to easily climb between plants and vegetation of ponds and banks.

Traces and footprints: more life than it seems

Often, only the traces of the fauna living in the Park allow us to find out who they are, where they live and how they feed.
Owl´s pellet: Many birds expel the parts of their food that are difficult to digest (hairs, feathers, little bones, insect wings...) through their mouths, shaped like compressed pellets.

Dung pellet rabbit: Deposited in visible places such as elevations, anthills, molehills..., rabbit droppings are round and measure about four millimeters in diameter. With their accumulation they mark their territory.

Lynx footprint: Is similar to the footprint of a cat, but a little larger. It is rounded and leaves no trace of its claws. The four marks on the finger pads are aligned in an open arch, and the pad is triangular.
Deer droppings: They are cylindrical in shape, pointed at one end and round at the other, dark in color and measure about 15-20 mm. It usually appears in small piles in the usual living and feeding areas of the species.

The pasture: by man´s actions

The pastures represent one of the most characteristic elements of Cardeña and Montoro: a mountain transformed for its us, also its conservation is combined with livestock and forestry uses.
The sheep, a suitable species in the meadow: It provides an optimal maintenance of the meadow because it uses the pastures for its feeding. When it eats, it cuts the grass without pulling it up and encourage the growth and conservation of the pasture. And it works as a natural fertilizer, spreading its excrements evenly.

Diversity of products and benefits: The pasture offers a great variety of products derived from livestock: milk, meat, wool and leather. And other direct uses: firewood, hunting, cork, honey and pollen... And indirect benefits and products, with a high social and ecological value, such as the beauty of its landscape or recreational and educational practices.
