You are going to take a virtual tour of a visitor's centre and a trail adapted for people with functional diversity. This is a project financed by La Caixa that aims to bring the Natural Areas of Andalusia closer to everyone in an inclusive way through 8 virtual tours, one per province.

The aim of this project is to show the route and the equipment as well as its interpretative content so that users can assess their degree of accessibility before going through it "in situ".

The tours start at a visitor reception facility and continue along an adapted trail. The virtual tour is an experience in itself, as there is the option of taking an immersive visit using virtual reality glasses with a smartphone (APP Matterport VR).
On the main screen we find icons (see image):

To exit the view we are in, click on one of the icons that appear in the lower left corner, depending on the user's intention.
In the legend, this different options appears:

START: A useful option to move quickly to the beginning of the trail or to the visitor center.
INFORMATION: This tab shows all the information markers outside the reception equipment classified by "LANDMARKS" and "ACCESIBILITY". Each one can be accessed by clicking on its description and allows you to continue the tour from that same point.
LOCATION: Address of the reception equipment

We hope you enjoy this immersive experience and decide to visit this site personally.

The English Houses are one of the legacies from the mining era. Comprising of three British colonial-style houses where the Director of the mine, two Engineers and their respective families lived.

These houses had two peculiarities, one that they had en-suite washrooms, something unusual in other houses, and another that the kitchens were separate from the other rooms of the house, which was an unequivocal symbol of social class.
One of them was restored to house the Information Point which is where you are right now.

Mining village:

The company began the construction of the mining town at the end of the 19th century, finishing it in 1914. The urban layout followed the patterns established at the time, being similar to other mining towns of British origin that were built in the Iberian Peninsula.
The town was endowed with a series of services such as a school, a football pitch, a church and even a worker's cooperative shop.

The karst landscape, a result of limestone rock modeling, establishes a unique space for many living species that find their "home" here.

This ecosystem is surrounded by Mediterranean scrub spots near to meadow forests. All this ultimately results in the increase of biodiversity at Cerro del Hierro.

The black stork:

For the most part it is a solitary bird that keeps its distance from man. As it is a migratory bird it can be seen between the months of March to September when it comes to nest in the area.
It uses quiet stretches of streams and rivers, as well as cattle ponds, to feed on invertebrates, amphibians and fish.
It is listed as "Vulnerable" in Spain, and is very sensitive to disturbances that occur around
it´s nest.

Lichens:

Lichens are organisms resulting from the union between a fungus and algae, establishing a mutually beneficial relationship. In reality, it is a “marriage of convenience” that is maintained as long as light and damp conditions are favorable. In addition to serving as food and shelter for many living beings, they provide us with information about the air quality of the place.
At Cerro del Hierro lichens appear both on the tree bark and shrubs as a "fluff", as on the surface of the rocks.

An orchid paradise:

There are a great variety of orchids on the Cerro (or Hill). Although all compete in beauty, it is worth noting the "yellow orchid", which can be found within the karst itself and in its surroundings.
Although it is not the only place in the Sierra Norte where it appears, this species is included in the Andalusian Red List of threatened species, so we must be very respectful if we see a specimen so as not to damage it.

The European Geoparks Network, founded in 2000, aims to protect geodiversity to promote geological heritage to the general public, as well as to support the sustainable economic development of the region, mainly through the development of geological tourism.

The Sierra Norte in Seville, first declared a Natural Park in 1989, became part of the European Geopark Network in September 2011.

The sheer size of the geopark and its geological, archaeological and mining wealth encompass fascinating Geological Points of Interest and Geotouristic Routes from short to medium distance, through which the visitor can learn about the most significant aspects of Seville´s Sierra Norte Natural Park.

Numerous remains of mining facilities are still present on the landscape today.

Within in the mine itself we can see various facilities such as the “powder keg” where dynamite was kept under guard, different deposits or the remains of the “crusher” where the ore was crushed before being loaded onto the railway.

The ore was extracted from the inside of the mine with wagons pulled by animals and cables, using the multiple “tunnels” that linked the different alleys and corridors of Cerro del Hierro.

This spectacular landscape is the result of various events, produced both by the action of nature and that of human beings.

Cerro del Hierro is a spectacular and unique example of a karst relief.
A karst is a landscape characterized by structures created by the disintegration of carbonated rocks, gypsum or salts, and of slightly acidified rainwater as a result of its contact with air.

Cerro del Hierro is the union of two Karsts, one very old, known as "Paleokarst", and another more modern, which is still sculpting the rock today.
The existence of this "Paleokarst" is one of the "oddities" that makes this monument of nature so great.

This Paleokarst started to form in the Cambrian period, and was subsequently conserved by a layer of soil that sealed it, thus preserving the climatic conditions that existed at that time forever.

The importance of the Paleokarst, from a human perspective, is that it has been the hub or container of a "rich" mainland. The mineral “treasures” exploited today were deposited in all the structures that formed at that time.

To understand the biodiversity of a region is to understand that throughout our lives we are accompanied by a multitude of living beings very different from each other, inseparable travel- ling companions.

The Sierra Norte Natural Park in Seville is a region where the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity are at one with each other. It is precisely for this reason that it has been recognized by the Biosphere Reserve.

The landscape of this region is formed by a puzzle of different habitats encompassing meadows, riverside forests, through to leafy forest formations, agricultural crops and scrubland areas.

A walk through the natural park is a walk through the oldest rocky formations in the province of Seville, formed in the Primary Era.
The diversity of rocky substrates makes for a wide variety of soil types, giving rise to a greater diversity of plant species that colonize the area.

Ferns: Plants Trapped In Time

Within the karst and adapted to the wet and rocky alleys, we come across this group of plants that still retain very primitive characteristics such as the absence of flowers and seeds and the use of spores as a plant dispersion strategy.

The existence of these living beings takes us back to a very distant past, more than 400 million years ago, even before the existence of dinosaurs on our planet.
